Overview and Eligibility: The TL1 program supports full-time research training (at least 40 hours per week) for U.S. citizens or permanent residents. Trainees receive a monthly stipend, tuition support, health insurance, and childcare support at NIH NRSA levels.
Application Process: Applications are collected via a RedCap portal. Candidates must submit an NIH Biosketch, a one-page Research Project Plan, a three-page Personal Statement, and a Mentor Statement of Support.
Pre-doctoral: Supports students in the dissertation stage of their PhD or MD-PhD after qualifying exams. Requirements include semi-annual thesis committee meetings and at least one first-author publication to defend.
Post-doctoral: Tailored for physician-scientists (MD) and PhD researchers. Physician fellows are strongly encouraged to obtain a Master’s Degree (MSCE, MSHP, or MTR) to accelerate career development.
